James Dolan Reflects on 25 Years of Ownership Experience
James Dolan, the owner of the New York Knicks, recently offered a candid reflection on his 25 years in sports management, acknowledging both his missteps and the lessons learned along the way. During a discussion, he stated, “Did I make mistakes? Of course I did. Did I trust people that maybe I shouldn’t have trusted?”
Dolan elaborated on the challenges of entering the role of an owner, recalling how he initially believed he had a firm grasp on the responsibilities. “You go into it as a new owner and if you’re dumb enough, you think you actually know what you’re doing. Believe me, you don’t,” he admitted. He described the experience of feeling overwhelmed by external opinions, saying, “You have everybody whispering in your ear: Do this, do that.”
He further addressed the scrutiny from the media, remarking, “You have you guys, the press, telling us where we’re going wrong at every step. And, you can start to feel like a pinball.” Despite these challenges, Dolan expressed a sense of accomplishment, noting, “The thing is, is to learn. Right? That might be the thing I feel best about is, I felt, I feel, that now after 25 freaking years of doing this, I might actually have learned something.”
This reflection comes at a time when the Knicks are striving for success in the highly competitive NBA landscape, highlighting the ongoing evolution of leadership in sports.
