The Tour de France is down to its final six stages. Heading into Stage 15, it was pretty clear who the frontrunners were. UAE Team Emirates' Tadej Pogačar led the pack with a 4:30 buffer between him and his closest competitor Jonas Vingegaard. However, as the cyclists traversed through the steep and difficult climb of Plateau de Solaison, Vingegaard crashed.

The 29-year-old, and two-time Tour champion, watched his Tour de France hopes wash away with the fall. His time in cycling's marquee event is over for 2026.

His team, Visma, confirmed Vingegaard's withdrawal from the Tour via a post on X.

When did Vingegaard win the Tour de France?

Vingegaard won the Tour de France in both 2022 and 2023. In the two years since, Tadej Pogačar has won both events and is on pace to win his third straight. If Pogačar does hold onto his lead, he will become just the sixth cyclist in history to win the event in three straight years, and the first since Chris Foome (2015-2017).

Who else was involved in the crash?

Vingegaard's teammate Sepp Kuss and Pogačar's teammate Isaac Del Toro were both involved in the crash. However, both men were able to continue after falling.
