Kaukauna Baseball Team Advances to Semifinals with Gates' Stellar Performance
The Kaukauna baseball team is making headlines as they continue their remarkable journey in the WIAA Division 1 state tournament. Led by the impressive pitching of Carson Gates, along with key contributions from Bron Schaefer and Brayden Jenkins, the third-seeded Ghosts secured a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded River Falls during the state quarterfinals on June 15 at Neuroscience Group Field in Appleton. With this win, Kaukauna is set to face Nicolet in the semifinals on June 17 at approximately 4:30 p.m.
With a season record of 22-7, this marks Kaukauna's first appearance at state since 1954, and they last celebrated a state championship in 1953. “It’s an amazing experience. I’m happy for these guys,” expressed Kaukauna coach Mike Jenkins. “I’m excited for them and where we’re sitting, one of the last four remaining here in Division 1. It’s fun to rewrite some Kaukauna history.”
Gates, a senior right-handed pitcher, delivered a complete game, allowing only five hits and one earned run while striking out five batters with just 82 pitches. River Falls briefly threatened in the seventh inning, but a sharp play from Kaukauna's Bennett Geitner and Kaden Kress ended the game with a double play. “He’s a bulldog out there,” said Jenkins about Gates. “He goes out there and attacks hitters… it was his game.”
River Falls initially took the lead in the third inning, but Kaukauna responded in the fifth. Schaefer's hustle allowed him to reach third base, and an interference call on the River Falls catcher allowed him to score, tying the game. Jenkins followed with a double, giving Kaukauna a 2-1 advantage. “Bron’s our energy. He’s our leader on the field,” praised Jenkins, highlighting Schaefer's pivotal role.
The Ghosts extended their lead in the sixth inning, driven by smart baserunning and timely hitting. After Bryce Urban walked and McKoy Luneau stole second, Blake Vandeloo hit a ground-rule double, bringing Luneau home. Schaefer's single later scored Vandeloo, sealing the victory. Gates expressed confidence in his team's ability to perform, stating, “I knew we were going to come alive. I didn’t have a doubt in my mind.”
As Kaukauna prepares for their semifinal matchup against Nicolet, Gates reflected on the significance of the moment for him and his team, saying, “It means so much to me and this program. That’s why I’m so emotional right now.”
