Lebanon Teen Jayden Bailey Honored Posthumously with Courage Award
In a poignant tribute, the late Jayden Bailey, a 17-year-old from Lebanon, has been awarded the 2026 Kaia Jergenson Courage Award, recognizing his incredible spirit throughout his battle with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer. The award was presented posthumously by Southeast Financial Credit Union during The Tennessean's Middle Tennessee Sports Awards.
On February 19, 2026, Jayden's mother, London Elie-Wright, found herself in a heartbreaking moment as she sat by her son’s bedside. As he lay weakening from his illness, Jayden whispered, "Mom, mom," expressing his desire for a simple farewell. After sharing a tender kiss and a final prayer, he passed away, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and hope.
Jayden, who had been diagnosed with cancer in June 2022, faced numerous challenges, including the loss of his left arm. Nevertheless, he continued to pursue his passion for basketball and inspired those around him with his unwavering determination and upbeat attitude. His mother reflected on the lessons he imparted, stating, "He lifted my chin and kissed me," a memory that encapsulates the affection and strength he shared with others.
Elie-Wright is expecting her third child in July and has chosen the name Obie Jay Wright for her son, a tribute to his late brother. She hopes to share stories of Jayden with him, ensuring that his brother’s memory lives on. "It’s become so clear and I’m thankful for that," she said, expressing gratitude for the perspectives gained through her son's courageous journey.
Jayden's impact extended beyond his family; he touched the lives of many, from his classmates to his girlfriend, Kyndall Robinson, who recalled their special moments together, including a memorable first kiss at school. His ability to bring joy and light, even in the darkest of times, will be remembered by all who knew him.
