Luis Diaz Shines as Colombia Defeats Uzbekistan 3-1 in World Cup Opener
Luis Diaz showcased his prowess by scoring one goal and providing an assist, leading Colombia to a 3-1 victory over World Cup newcomers Uzbekistan in their tournament debut on Wednesday.
Diaz, who plays for Bayern Munich, nearly put Colombia ahead in the 32nd minute when his shot hit the post. However, he set up Daniel Muñoz's opening goal just before halftime with an impressive long pass into the penalty area.
The match took a turn in the 60th minute when Uzbekistan, guided by Italy’s 2006 World Cup champion Fabio Cannavaro, equalized with a historic goal. Abbosbek Fayzullaev capitalized on a mistake by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas, who failed to clear a volley from Eldor Shomurodov, allowing Fayzullaev to score the nation’s first-ever goal in World Cup history.
Colombia quickly regained the advantage just five minutes later, as Diaz found the net himself, sliding the ball across the goal. Uzbekistan had a chance to level again late on, but Akmal Mozgovoy shot over the bar. Colombia then put the match away in stoppage time when Cucho Hernandez delivered a precise cross to Jaminton Campaz, who scored with a powerful header.
With this victory, Colombia surprisingly finds itself at the top of Group K, ahead of the heavily favored Portugal, who are currently in third place after drawing 1-1 with the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opener.
