Matt Garbett Withdraws from World Cup Squad; Logan Rogerson Steps In
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — New Zealand midfielder Matt Garbett will not participate in the World Cup, as he has been sidelined due to a hamstring injury sustained during practice over the weekend. The announcement was made by New Zealand Football on social media just hours before the team's first match against Iran.
Expressing their disappointment, New Zealand Football stated, “The whole squad’s thoughts are with Matt at this time and we are gutted he won’t be able to play in the tournament.” The 24-year-old Garbett, who represents Peterborough in England's League One, has earned 38 caps for the national team and netted five goals, including his recent appearance in a friendly against England.
Filling Garbett's spot in the 26-man roster is Logan Rogerson, a forward from Auckland FC. This marks a significant moment for New Zealand, as they return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2010, competing in Group G alongside Iran, Egypt, and Belgium.
