Mavericks Eye Cooper Flagg and Potential Partnership with Spurs’ $229 Million Veteran
The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly focused on constructing a team around rookie sensation Cooper Flagg following an impressive debut season. Flagg, who played for Duke, demonstrated his potential as a future star by averaging 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.2 steals over 70 games. His skill set includes remarkable agility in transition, a unique jab-and-go maneuver, sharp pick-and-roll awareness, and versatile defensive capabilities.
According to CBS Sports’ Sam Quinn, the Mavericks might consider pairing the young talent with a well-known veteran guard from the San Antonio Spurs. Quinn noted, “Dallas already has Kyrie Irving. He’s 34 and coming off a torn ACL. If they’d prefer a younger, pricier guard alongside the 19-year-old Cooper Flagg, Fox is an option here.”
Irving's role in the team could shift depending on whether he is open to a bench position, which would allow for a more dynamic lineup. If not, a potential three-way trade could be on the horizon, involving the acquisition of Irving and sending assets to San Antonio.
De'Aaron Fox, the Spurs’ two-time All-Star, has faced criticism following a disappointing performance in the NBA Finals, which saw the New York Knicks end a 53-year championship drought. His maximum contract of $229 million complicates any trade negotiations, yet the Spurs are reportedly considering a move to part ways with him. A transition to a developing team like the Mavericks might provide Fox with a fresh start and a chance to regain his form.
This potential shift comes amid broader discussions around team strategies as franchises prepare for the upcoming season.
