Prior to today’s series finale with the Royals, the Mets selected Dan Hammer to the major league roster. The right-hander will wear the number 81 as he makes his debut to the big leagues. In a corresponding move, the team sent Tobias Myers back to Triple-A, and have designated outfielder Jared Oliva for assignment to make space on the 40-man roster.

Hammer came out of the University of Pennsylvania and was drafted in the 13th round of the 2019 draft by the Orioles. The 28-year-old spent parts of the past six seasons between the Orioles and Rays organizations. Tampa Bay selected him in the Rule V draft a couple of years back, which ended his time in the Orioles’ organization. For the Mets this year, he’s posted a 2.77 ERA in 13 innings with Binghamton and a 1.77 ERA in 20 1/3 innings with Syracuse. Hammer will be added to the growing list of relievers to suit up for the Mets this year, making the eventual Sporcle quiz on 2026 Mets all the more challenging.

Myers picked up a blown save in yesterday’s Mets victory, allowing a run in the sixth inning immediately after coming in for Christian Scott following his five shutout innings. He ended up pitching two innings and allowing just the one run, but with the team in search of fresh arms and having no rest before the All-Star break, they opted to send him back to Syracuse to get a fresh arm on the roster.

Myers started off the year on fire, pitching to a 2.05 ERA over his first 10 outings., but has seen that ERA jump by over four runs. Since May 6, he owns a 10.23 ERA and a 6.35 FIP in 22 innings across 15 outings, which features a couple of starts. Since sending him down on May 30 to reportedly stretch him out to a starting pitcher, he has returned as a reliever, and a borderline un-rosterable one at that. Since his initial return on June 15, he owns a 12.66 ERA and a 5.93 FIP in 10 2/3 innings across his five outings. He has allowed at least one earned run in each of his last seven appearances and in nine of his last ten at the major league level.
