Monroe County Region girls basketball tips off state tourneys
DUNDEE – The madness has begun.
Just a few hours after the girls basketball tournaments kicked off across the state of Michigan, Ida pulled off the kind of upset that makes March great.
The Blue Streaks avenged two earlier losses to sting Dundee 43-39 on Monday, March 2 in the opening game of the Division 2 District that Dundee is hosting.
“We’ve been looking for this all year long,” said Ida coach Tim Leonard. “They girls just had to believe in themselves.”
How did Leonard’s 9-13 team turn the tables on their 15-8 archrivals?
“We just did a better job,” the veteran coach said. “We changed up a few things. We did a better job of getting the ball inside to take the pressure off our guards.”
Alli Schrader scored 19 points to lead Ida, which advances the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday to play 19-2 Tecumseh.
Maddie Salenbien scored 14 points in her final game for Dundee.
“Ida deserves some credit,” Dundee coach Jay Briggs said. “They made things tough for us. Great season overall for our girls. We’ll miss our seniors.”
