Norway's Viking Revival Sparks Debate Ahead of World Cup
FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (AP) — As Norway prepares for its first World Cup appearance in 28 years, the nation is embracing its Viking heritage in a bold and spirited manner. The excitement began with fans performing a coordinated “Viking row” during matches, and it has escalated with players donning authentic Viking gear, including weapons and shields, for a dramatic photo shoot against a stunning fjord backdrop.
Norway star Erling Haaland expressed his enthusiasm on social media, sharing a nostalgic image of the team alongside a photo of his father, Alfie Haaland, who represented Norway in the 1994 World Cup. “A dream 28 years in the making... let’s do this!” he posted, highlighting the significance of the moment.
Manager Stale Solbakken noted that the Viking-themed photo shoot was a collaborative decision among the players and the federation, even though he had some reservations at first. “The players wanted me to do it. They were positive. The federation was positive. And I was average positive. And then we did it," he explained.
The Viking fan routine, featuring supporters in helmets and team jerseys rowing in sync to a drumbeat, is expected to draw attention during group games against Iraq, France, and Senegal. It could mirror the impact of Iceland's “thunder clap,” which gained global recognition during the 2016 European Championship.
However, the Viking photo has sparked controversy, with some critics labeling it as “chauvinistic.” British photographer David Yarrow, who captured the image, acknowledged potential backlash in a recent interview. Commentator Markus Slettholm from Morgenbladet voiced concerns, suggesting the imagery evokes troubling historical connotations associated with Viking raids. In response, Solbakken dismissed the criticism, stating, “There are many bigger and more difficult topics. I can’t afford to waste time on that.” The sales from the Viking-themed photo will reportedly benefit Norwegian charities.
