Official: Alejo Sarco departs Bundesliga to join Sporting Gijón

After only six Bundesliga appearances in 18 months, Alejo Sarco has joined LaLiga2 side Sporting Gijón. According to reports, Bayer Leverkusen secured a buyback option for the 20-year-old attacker.

Sarco joined Bayer Leverkusen as a free agent at the start of 2025. The former Vélez Sarsfield striker was on the move once again a year later as he was loaned to Borussia Mönchengladbach for the second half of last season.

In total, he has only played six Bundesliga games for the two clubs. On the contrary, he was one of the key players when Argentina reached the U20 World Cup final in October 2025. Sporting Gijón are preparing for their tenth successive season in Spanish's second-tier.

“Alejo (Sarco) did not get the playing time he hoped for in his year and a half with us. With his move to Spain, he now has the opportunity to collect important minutes. We trust him a lot and will follow his development closely." said Leverkusen’s sports director Simon Rolfes after the completion of the deal.
