Phetjeeja Aims for Historic Unification at Inner Circle 19
After a prolonged wait and a frustrating delay, the world of combat sports is finally set for an exhilarating showdown. Phetjeeja Lukjaoporongtom, the reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight Kickboxing World Champion, is ready to face Allycia Hellen Rodrigues, the current ONE Women’s Atomweight Muay Thai World Champion, in the highly anticipated main event of The Inner Circle 19. This thrilling matchup will take place on June 19 at Bangkok's renowned Lumpinee Stadium and will be streamed live for fans in Asia.
The journey to this significant title unification has been anything but straightforward. Initially scheduled for ONE Fight Night 41 earlier this year, both fighters were forced to withdraw due to injuries sustained during training. While disappointing, Phetjeeja understood the necessity of the postponement, stating, “Yeah, I did. But I was also dealing with an injury during training camp at the time, so I figured pushing it back was probably for the best.”
For many athletes, a delay can disrupt their rhythm, but for Phetjeeja, it turned into a chance for deeper preparation. With an impressive undefeated record of 8-0 in ONE and a stellar overall record of 210-6, she used the additional time to further analyze Rodrigues’ fighting style. “Honestly, I wouldn’t really call it an advantage because I’ve actually been studying her for years,” she explained. “But having that extra time after the postponement was great because it allowed me to get a full training camp in.”
The significance of this fight extends beyond personal achievements. Phetjeeja remarked on the unprecedented excitement surrounding the matchup, noting, “Fans in Thailand are incredibly hyped for it, and it’s the same worldwide.” She emphasized the rarity of such high-stakes female bouts capturing global attention, adding that she anticipates an incredible display of skill and athleticism.
For Phetjeeja, the ultimate goal is clear: to secure the coveted title held by Rodrigues. “Man, that belt would mean everything to me,” she declared. “Winning it has been my number one goal ever since I decided to come back to Muay Thai.” With aspirations that extend beyond this fight, she is open to future challenges, including potential forays into MMA, stating, “If I win this belt, I’d actually love to try training in MMA.”
