Phillies Dominate Marlins 7-0 Behind Wheeler’s Strong Performance and Rincones’ Historic Hit

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies showcased an impressive performance on Monday night, defeating the Miami Marlins 7-0. Pitcher Zack Wheeler delivered a stellar outing, striking out nine batters over six innings while allowing just two hits. Gabriel Rincones Jr. made his mark by homering for his first major league hit, contributing to the team's victory.

Joining Rincones in the spotlight was J.T. Realmuto, who also hit a home run, and Bryce Harper, who added an RBI to the scoreline. This win marked the initiation of a six-game home stretch for Philadelphia. Meanwhile, the Marlins struggled offensively, with Liam Hicks accounting for two of their four hits. This loss was just the third for Miami in their last 13 games in June.

Wheeler (6-1) began the game by allowing a single to Hicks and then walked Otto Lopez. He quickly regained control, striking out four consecutive batters to establish his dominance on the mound. The 36-year-old pitcher’s ERA now stands at an impressive 2.01 after his ten starts this season. Relief pitchers Tim Mayza, Jonathan Bowlan, and Chase Shugart each contributed a scoreless inning, ensuring the shutout.

Rincones, who was elevated to the lineup following the injury of right fielder Adolis García, made his presence felt in the second inning by driving an 84-mph slider from Ryan Gusto (0-2) over the right field wall, putting the Phillies ahead 1-0. He further extended the lead in the third inning with a bases-loaded groundout.

Realmuto’s two-run homer in the fifth inning, which sailed over the left field wall, increased the Phillies’ lead to 5-0. Gusto, who surrendered five runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings, struggled to contain the Philadelphia lineup. Brandon Marsh, boasting one of the highest batting averages in the league, added two hits to raise his average to .324.

With this victory, the Phillies improved to 30-14 under interim manager Don Mattingly. Currently, they are in second place in the NL East, trailing the Atlanta Braves by eight games while securing a wild-card position. Shortstop Trea Turner did not play in the eighth inning due to a right wrist contusion.

Looking ahead, the Marlins will send RHP Tyler Phillips (1-1, 1.86 ERA) to the mound against Phillies LHP Jesús Luzardo (5-4, 4.35) in the second game of this three-game series on Tuesday evening.
