Providence Goaltender Jack Parsons Poised for Draft Opportunity
This article focuses on John “Jack” Parsons, a goaltender eligible for the upcoming draft and currently attending Providence College. It's important to clarify that he is not to be confused with other players sharing his name, including a former San Diego State center or a younger goaltender from Holy Cross.
Born in 2006 in Ithaca, New York, Parsons is a double re-entry into this year's draft, having first been eligible in 2024. After a standout season with the Friars, he is now a potential candidate for selection. His hockey journey began at Mount St. Charles Academy, followed by two years with the US National Team Development Program (USNTDP) and a stint with the Chicago Steel before joining Providence.
During his first season with the Friars, he initially served as a backup to star goaltender Philip Svedebäck. However, when Svedebäck suffered an injury in January, Parsons seized the opportunity. As noted by Offside News writer Cier Kang, "Parsons was so goated" during the remainder of the season. His performance was remarkable, leading him to a 13-5 record, a .922 save percentage, and a 2.05 goals against average, alongside two shutouts.
Parsons’ emergence helped stabilize the Friars, who had struggled with consistency prior to his increased playtime. Under his guidance, the team enjoyed a nine-game winning streak that spanned from January into February. His efforts not only earned him a spot as a Walter Brown Semifinalist but also garnered multiple accolades within Hockey East, including Rookie of the Month honors in January and two Goaltender of the Week awards.
Looking ahead to next season, Parsons is likely to be the starting goaltender for the Friars, although he will face competition from freshman Ben Hrebik. With an impressive ranking of 155th overall by Elite Prospects, Parsons is noted for his exceptional hand-eye coordination, athleticism, and solid puck-tracking abilities, despite some concerns about handling traffic in front of the net. His impressive physique at six-foot-four and 193 pounds only adds to his appeal, making him a strong candidate for mid-round selection in the draft.
