Year after year, Thibaut Courtois continues to maintain his quality and remain Real Madrid’s first-choice goalkeeper, almost defying the phenomenon of ageing.

Already 34 years of age now, however, it is only a matter of time before the Belgian international’s inevitable age-related decline begins and Real Madrid are aware of the same.

As reported by Ben Fernandes Santos in a recent update, Los Blancos have already begun to think about the post-Courtois era and are planning for the same.

A replacement is required

The journalist emphasises that the imminent departure of Fran Gonzalez to Sevilla has got the Real Madrid administration thinking about the future of the goalkeeping position, especially given how Gonzalez has been seen as Courtois’ replacement for a long time.

Los Blancos, needless to say, now have their eyes on the transfer market in the hope of finding a worthy successor and will begin scouting profiles beginning this summer.

No arrival or signing is expected this summer as matters stand, especially given that the club have other priorities and that the goalkeeping position is well covered as matters stand.

In 2027, however, there is a growing chance that Real Madrid will push for a new arrival between the sticks.

A trustworthy deputy for the time being

For years now, Andriy Lunin has served as Real Madrid’s trusted backup for Courtois and has had a prominent role at some point in the season every campaign.

The Ukrainian star has undoubtedly been linked with a departure in recent years, especially given his lack of minutes as a starter. Lunin, however, has embraced the role of a backup and continues to perform his duties without any fuss.

Los Blancos contemplated his future once again this summer, but have decided to keep him once again given Courtois’ fragile fitness in recent times. He will provide the necessary cover and depth in the department for this season.

Aged just 27, he could well provide an interim solution next season should Courtois be unable to maintain his level as well. After all, he is a tried and tested figure who has delivered under pressure in the past.
