Sean Payton reveals change to Broncos' offseason schedule
Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton did an impromptu interview with Pat McAfee at the NFL combine on Thursday, and he revealed two nuggets about the team's offseason.
First, Payton revealed that the team's new training facility is three months away from opening, just in time for the start of training camp this summer. Second, he noted a change to the team's offseason schedule.
NFL teams with returning coaches are allowed to begin their offseason programs on April 20, but the Broncos will start a few weeks later than that.
"[We] pushed the offseason schedule back a little bit," Payton told McAfee. "Normally, it starts mid-April. Our guys won't come in until the first of May. And then we won't do a football item until June — they'll just be lifting for a month before we ever [practice]."
Denver went 14-3 in the regular season last fall and made it all the way to the AFC Championship game before losing with a backup quarterback under center. After that long season, Payton said players now need time to recover, so they will remain in "Phase 1" of the offseason program for a month before beginning OTAs and minicamp in June.
