Chiefs are projected to move on from Super Bowl-winning running back
The Kansas City Chiefs struggled to run the football at times during the 2025 season, leading to multiple games in which Patrick Mahomes was the team's top rusher. The group of running backs will likely be shaken up as a Super Bowl-winning starter may have played his last game for the franchise.
According to The Athletic's Jesse Newell, Chiefs running back Isiah Pacheco's future with the team is in doubt and is considered "likely" to sign with another team during free agency. A seventh-round pick in the 2022 draft, Pacheco finished out his rookie contract. The Chiefs won back-to-back Super Bowls in his first two years as he served as a spark plug with his trademark aggressive running style.
Over the past two seasons, Pacheco has been slowed by injuries, playing 20 games since the start of 2023, tallying 952 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns during that span.
The Chiefs have been consistently linked to running backs Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker III, and Travis Etienne in recent weeks. Each player possesses another dimension the team could explore to revamp the offense going into the 2026 season.
