The Intense Rivalry of Boston College and Boston University Hockey

The fierce competition between Boston College (BC) and Boston University (BU), often referred to as the Battle of Commonwealth Ave. or the Green Line Rivalry, stands out as one of college hockey's most historic rivalries. These two schools are separated by only a few miles, intensifying the passion of their matchups. As Offside News writer Katrina Liu noted, "We travel to beanpot together on the same f*cking train. it's brutal," highlighting the proximity and shared experiences of fans and players alike.

Since 1949, these teams have faced off at least twice each year, consistently showcasing some of the brightest young talent in the sport while fueling a fierce animosity. Their rivalry was further heightened by the Beanpot tournament, which has been a staple of college hockey since 1952. The rivalry truly escalated in the 1970s when legendary BU coach Jack Parker took the helm, leading the Terriers to significant victories, including three national championships and 21 Beanpot titles.

On the opposing side, Jerry York, who coached BC from 1994 onward, established a powerhouse program that claimed four national titles and nine Beanpots. The intense competition between Parker and York defined a remarkable era in college hockey, with both teams frequently battling for Hockey East and Beanpot championships. The rivalry transcends the ice, with fans engaging in playful banter and taunts, making it a unique aspect of their experience.

Despite their success, the two teams have never faced each other while both ranked #1 and #2, which many fans believe is a missed opportunity. The 2023-24 season, however, offered thrilling matchups, including a series of games where BU was ranked first and BC second. In a dramatic series, BC swept BU at home and later faced them in the Beanpot semifinals, where BU narrowly lost. Both teams ultimately fell short in the Frozen Four, adding to the rivalry's lore.

With new leadership on both sidelines, the rivalry continues to thrive. As both programs rebuild, the upcoming seasons promise to reignite the fierce competition that has captivated college hockey fans for decades.
