Taylor Fritz Remains Grounded Despite Alcaraz's Wimbledon Withdrawal

Carlos Alcaraz's absence from Wimbledon, due to a wrist injury that also sidelined him from defending his title at the French Open, has raised questions about the impact on other ATP players. However, Taylor Fritz, currently ranked ninth in the world, is choosing to stay focused on his own game rather than speculate on his chances without the two-time champion in the mix.

Fritz, who took a brief hiatus from the tour earlier this year to address knee tendinitis, returned to competition at the Geneva Open, but faced a first-round elimination at the French Open. Since then, he has found his rhythm on grass, a surface where he has secured five of his ten career titles. He reached the finals of the BOSS Open, narrowly losing to Ben Shelton, and has advanced to the semifinals of the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle.

In a recent interview, Fritz was asked if Alcaraz's withdrawal had influenced his aspirations for the Wimbledon title, especially after losing to the Spaniard in the semifinals last year. He responded thoughtfully, emphasizing the unpredictability of grass courts, stating, “No, I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, because it is grass and anything can happen.” He acknowledged that his confidence was higher heading into last year's tournament but reiterated his need to establish a solid level of belief in his game this time around.

Fritz highlighted the importance of consistency as he prepares for Wimbledon. “Obviously, we’re early in the grass court season. I played well last week, but I need two more good weeks,” he noted, expressing confidence in his ability to succeed if he maintains his current form.

With a quarterfinal victory over Shelton in Halle providing a much-needed morale boost, Fritz is set to face top seed Alexander Zverev next. He enters this matchup with a strong track record, having won all six of their most recent encounters, including two on grass.
