Tensions Rise Between Jazz and Center Walker Kessler Ahead of Free Agency
Recent insights from NBA journalist Sam Amick of The Athletic indicate that Walker Kessler, the center for the Utah Jazz, is experiencing growing tensions with the team following the lack of a contract extension offer last season. As Kessler approaches the restricted free agency period in 2026, the Jazz will have the option to match any contract he may sign with another team.
With the addition of center Jaren Jackson Jr. from the Memphis Grizzlies, Utah's frontcourt has become increasingly crowded. Other players in this lineup include Kyle Filipowski, Lauri Markkanen, and Ace Bailey, the latter being the fifth overall pick in last year's draft. Should Kessler enter the market via a sign-and-trade, he would quickly emerge as one of the more desirable centers available, alongside Domantas Sabonis from the Sacramento Kings.
Despite limited playing time last season—due to a torn labrum that sidelined him for much of the year—Kessler has demonstrated his potential. In 58 games prior to his injury, he averaged 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and an impressive 2.4 blocks per game. Notably, he led the league in offensive rebounds with an average of 4.6 per game.
As Kessler enters his 25-year-old season, he could prove to be a valuable asset for various contending teams if a resolution with the Jazz cannot be reached.
