Coming off an All-Star Game experience in which Kevin McGonigle met and began a budding friendship with Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout, the Detroit Tigers' rookie continued seeing stars.

Growing up about 45 minutes from Citizens Bank Park, McGonigle also introduced himself to his childhood athletic hero, former Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley, the player he modeled his game after.

When asked by the MLB Network what it meant to begin two cool professional relationships and play before family and friends, he said: "It means the world (to me). It's really special."

McGonigle continues to specialize his rookie campaign.

Capping an eight-pitch at-bat, the 2023 No. 37 overall draft pick doubled to right-center field, benefiting after Trout missed on a diving catch attempt. It was his 100th hit of the season, establishing a piece of franchise history.

McGonigle and Hall of Famer Ty Cobb are the only players aged 21 or under to hit the century mark before playing in 100 games.

On July 12, McGonigle moved into third place all-time by reaching base 161 times before the All-Star break by players aged 21 or younger.

The Tigers, who rallied in the ninth inning Friday to secure a 2-1 victory at Angel Stadium, needed a strong second-half start to overcome a season-turning 6-22 May. Ignited by McGonigle's two hits and two runs scored during his first two at-bats Saturday, the Tigers jumped out to a 6-0, third-inning advantage.

The Tigers are one of the clubs expected to help shape the MLB trade deadline market over the next two-plus weeks.

McGonigle, meanwhile, continues to help shape the Tigers' lineup before appearing in his 100th game.
