Trump Appears to Get Booed at World Cup

President Donald Trump seemed to get a frosty reception Sunday from the crowd at the World Cup men’s soccer final between Spain and Argentina.

Flanked on either side by his wife Melania Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the president was briefly shown on the big screen at the conclusion of Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of the National Anthem — and seemed to get boos from the capacity crowd at MetLife Stadium. Though the boos were only somewhat audible on the Fox Sports broadcast feed (which can be briefly seen starting at the 2:07 mark of the clip below, additional video circulating social media from inside the stadium seemed to confirm a negative crowd reaction.

It is the second time in as many months that Trump has drawn boos at a major sporting event in the New York-New Jersey area. In June, the president was heavily jeered as he was shown to the crowd on the big screen during the singing of the National Anthem.

Trump is slated to be on the field during the postgame ceremony to award the trophy to the winning side. He has enjoyed a close relationship with Infantino — who created and awarded him the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize in late 2025.

The president was interviewed by Fox Sports ahead of Sunday’s match, and seemed to lean towards predicting an Argentina victory.

“I would say that it’s hard to bet against [Lionel] Messi,” Trump said. He added, “He’s great.”
