TV Host Steps Down After Controversial Comments on Messi's Father
Florencia Peña has stepped down from her role at Luzu TV following a significant backlash over her erroneous announcement regarding Jorge Messi, the father of soccer superstar Lionel Messi, during a live broadcast. This incident took place shortly after Argentina's emotional 3-0 victory over Algeria in the World Cup, where Lionel Messi achieved a remarkable hat trick.
During the show "El Show del Verano," Peña stated, "I don’t want to bring bad news, but Messi’s father has just passed away. It was sudden. In the middle of the World Cup." The claim was made without proper verification, leading to widespread panic before the Messi family clarified that Jorge Messi was alive and recovering from a health issue while under medical care.
In light of the incident, Peña expressed her regret, saying, "I apologize to the Messi family. I am deeply ashamed to have been involved in this mistake." She further explained that the information had been presented to her as confirmed news while she was on air, adding, "I trusted it." However, she took full responsibility for the mishap, stating, "Even so, I take responsibility for being part of the mistake and that is why I decided to step aside and end my participation in Luzu."
The timing of the error was particularly damaging, coming just after Lionel Messi's impressive performance, which added emotional weight to an already charged atmosphere. Luzu TV acknowledged the mistake, emphasizing the need for rigorous verification of sensitive information before broadcasting. Nicolás Occhiato, a representative of the channel, confirmed that those accountable would be held responsible and reiterated their commitment to high journalistic standards.
The incident has drawn criticism from various quarters, including Argentina’s president, Javier Milei, who labeled the broadcast "trash talk" and condemned the dissemination of unverified personal information about individuals. This event serves as a reminder of the critical importance of accuracy in live reporting.
