Unique Patches on World Cup Shirts Highlight Player Achievements
As England kicked off their World Cup journey against Croatia on Wednesday, fans may have noticed a distinctive feature on Harry Kane's jersey. Located on the sleeve beneath the tournament emblem, Kane sported a golden patch that was absent from the uniforms of his teammates.
This unique insignia signifies that Kane is a recipient of the Golden Boot, an accolade awarded to top scorers at the World Cup. Kane earned this honor in 2018 during the tournament in Russia, where he netted six goals, propelling England to the semi-finals.
Similarly, during France's match against Senegal on Tuesday, viewers spotted Kylian Mbappe wearing a golden patch, a recognition he received for scoring eight goals in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Additionally, James Rodriguez of Colombia also sports a golden patch, awarded for his six goals during the 2014 Brazil World Cup.
Other special patches are present at the tournament as well. Players making their World Cup debut are recognized with a patch featuring the tournament logo and the phrase "Debut FIFA World Cup." In contrast, veterans who have participated in five or more World Cups will display a "legacy" patch alongside their national flag.
Goalkeepers also receive special recognition with a patch highlighting those who have been named the best at the tournament, featuring a glove crest beneath the World Cup logo.
The introduction of these patches reflects a partnership between FIFA and Topps trading cards, aimed at creating collectible memorabilia. Once matches conclude, these patches will be removed from the shirts and included in collectible packs for fans, starting in 2031 when FIFA's contract with Panini expires.
