Utah Jazz Rumored To Land All-Star Kessler Replacement In Blockbuster LeBron Trade

According to a recent rumor surrounding LeBron James' offseason decision, the Utah Jazz could play a part in rerouting the Akron native back to his hometown Cavaliers to finish out his career in Cleveland, securing the rights to former All-Star and excellent center Jarrett Allen. 

And here I thought the Utah Jazz would be content sitting on their hands and letting Walker Kessler's absence tear a hole in the fabric of a roster finally ready to contend in the Western Conference.

The details of this proposed trade would send LeBron to Cleveland and Allen to Utah, of course, but it also throws in Anthony Davis, James' former teammate in Los Angeles who has been traded to Dallas and then to Washington, trading hands as NBA franchises attempt to wring the last drops of stardom from his ailing, injury-riddled body.

It's only a rumor, and a loosely-based one right now with no concrete source, but this has gathered a lot of traction as the NBA world awaits LeBron's free agency decision with bated breath.

Once James informed the Lakers that he wouldn't be returning to Los Angeles in what may be the final contract of his career -- but not a moment before Bronny James' contract became fully-guaranteed, which is a masterclass in family-first offseason moves -- the basketball news cycle was largely circulated around where this legend would spend his final season. 

But Jazz fans didn't really care, understanding that LeBron's likelihood of signing in Utah was a virtual impossibility. But if there's any meat in this trade rumor stew, the Jazz could be coming away with an ideal Walker Kessler replacement -- an upgrade in every sense.

Especially financially, as Allen, a former All-Star, is set to make $30 million per season over the next three years on his newly-signed contract with the Cavs.

He's not the shot blocker that Kessler was in Utah -- though few have recorded more blocks than Kessler in the entire NBA outside of Wembanyama -- but as an offensive weapon, his versatility blows Kessler out of the water.

Walker Kessler had been working on an outside shot during the last few seasons in Utah, though it rarely stretched beyond a gimmick as few of those looks actually dropped through the net. Allen likewise is not a three-point shooter, but a freak athlete with exceptional touch around the basket and very strong defensive numbers puts Allen a step ahead, earning the center All-Star honors back in 2021. He averaged 15.1 points per game last season.

If the Jazz can add a piece like Allen this offseason, they put themselves in contention to be a top-five team in the Western Conference, and perhaps push an outsider's chance of a deep playoff run in 2027.

So long as they don't have to give up too much in the process, of course.
