Vasco da Gama Parts Ways with Coach Renato Gaúcho
Renato Gaúcho's tenure as head coach of Vasco da Gama has officially come to an end after his third stint with the club. The 63-year-old was relieved of his duties on Thursday night, the 18th of the month.
In a formal announcement, Vasco stated, "Vasco da Gama announces that Renato Gaúcho is no longer the head coach of the professional team. The decision was made by mutual agreement between the parties. Vasco thanks the coach and his staff for the services provided during his third spell at the club and wishes them success in the continuation of their careers."
The decision follows a series of three consecutive losses in the Brasileirão, although Renato remained at the helm during this rough patch. Reports suggest that his critical remarks about the team in the weeks leading up to these defeats contributed to the decision to part ways. Some players reportedly took issue with his comments about the squad, particularly concerning the Colombian players.
Vasco's players are scheduled to return to training on Monday, the 22nd, with a month of preparation before their next match against Independiente Medellín in the Copa Sudamericana playoffs. During his time in charge, Renato led the team in 22 matches, achieving nine victories, six draws, and seven losses.
Initially, his leadership saw a promising start, including impressive wins against Palmeiras and a notable comeback against Fluminense, which rejuvenated the team's standing. However, a string of poor performances, including a heavy defeat to Inter and a loss to Olimpia in the Sudamericana, complicated their campaign. A subsequent victory against Barras Central secured their place in the Sudamericana playoffs, offering some respite before the Copa break.
