Where Florida ranks among the all-time top college football programs

Florida football's status among the collegiate gridiron's greatest programs has waned over the past couple of decades, but the Orange and Blue still stands among the best the sport has to offer.

By the end of the first decade of the 21st century, the Gators had amassed three claimed national titles in 1996, 2006 and 2008, plus a pair of unclaimed championships in 1984 and 1985. They also earned eight SEC titles — not including the stripped 1984 title, as well as 1985 and 1990, which were nullified by sanctions — and 11 SEC East crowns.

However, since then, Florida has earned just four division championships (which no longer exist as of 2024) and amassed a mediocre 118-84 record (58.4%), which includes six losing seasons — four of which have come since 2020.

Despite the recent doldrums, USA TODAY Sports writers Paul Myerberg, Blake Toppmeyer, Jordan Mendoza and Eddie Timanus still managed to find room for the Gators among their ranking of the top 25 college football programs. Florida landed outside of the top 10 on their list, coming in at No. 14 — just behind the No. 13 Clemson Tigers and ahead of the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies.

"Few individuals mean more to a program than what Steve Spurrier means to Florida. He revolutionized the Gators from an also-ran into one of the premier programs of the 1990s. The Head Ball Coach branded The Swamp and gave the Gators an identity. They became SEC championship game regulars. Urban Meyer injected more glory with two titles," the authors offered.

"Florida lacks the consistency and history of some higher-ranked programs, but its peaks are just as lofty," they also noted.

Nine of Florida's SEC peers accompany the program among the top 25, with the Alabama Crimson Tide — a true college football blue blood — coming in at No. 2 and the Georgia Bulldogs at No. 3, the latter largely due to their more recent success. Following them are the Texas Longhorns (No. 5), LSU Tigers (No. 6), Oklahoma Sooners (No. 8), Texas A&M (No. 15), Tennessee Volunteers (No. 16), Auburn Tigers (No. 21) and Ole Miss Rebels (No. 24).
