Why Texas A&M HC Michael Earley deserves SEC Coach of the Year
No. 10 Texas A&M (39-13, 18-11 SEC) will finish no worse than third in the SEC standings and will likely be the No. 3 seed in the SEC Tournament heading into next week's after entering the regular season with an impressive 7-6 rubber match and series victory over No. 13 Mississippi State on Saturday afternoon.
Aided by surprising pitching performances and Bear Harrison's 2 RBI double to take the final 7-6 lead in the 8th, second-year coach Michael Earley should be the frontrunner for SEC Coach of the Year, and is likely tied with Georgia Wes Johnson, who helped lead the Bulldogs to first-place in the SEC. For Earley's many doubters throughout the season, no one can deny that his second season has reached historical heights.
After what has been widely deemed a disastrous first-year campaign in 2025, Michael Earley's trajectory was crashing, but Texas A&M Athletic Director Trev Alberts gave the former volunteer hitting coach a second chance to earn his stripes after losing star infielder Gavin Grahovac early in the season, paired with Caden Sorrell's nagging injury issues that kept him in and out of the lineup.
Still, even with Grahovac and Sorrell returning, coupled with a talented list of transfer portal additions, Texas A&M was selected to finish 13th in the SEC, as the national belief in Michael Earley's ability to steer the ship back to the NCAA Tournament seemed like a pipe dream. Well, four months later, the Aggies are headed back to the NCAA Tournament after missing the postseason, and are squarely in play for a top 8 national seed.
No matter what happens in the SEC Tournament, Texas A&M's six SEC series wins, including sweeping Texas and defeating LSU and Florida on the road, are more than enough to solidify a top 8 seed with the opportunity to host throughout the Super Regional Round.
Again, many believed that Earley could be a midseason dismissal candidate before the season began, and with 39 wins, including 18 in SEC play, Texas A&M will enter the SEC Tournament with a double-bye to rest up and recharge before the NCAA Tournament begins. Not too shabby, Michael Earley.
