Why the Braves Should Steer Clear of Tarik Skubal Before the Trade Deadline

Tarik Skubal is the type of pitcher that can spark imaginative trade proposals from eager front offices. As a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner and one of the finest left-handed starters in Major League Baseball, Skubal's presence alone could significantly enhance a playoff-bound team's prospects. Before his stint on the injured list, he recorded a commendable 3-2 record, a 2.70 ERA, and a 0.95 WHIP, striking out 45 batters over 43 1/3 innings. His impressive performance is not merely a product of the spacious outfield at Comerica Park.

However, despite his stellar statistics, the argument for the Atlanta Braves to pursue Skubal should be approached cautiously. The Braves currently hold the best record in the league at 42-20 following a recent 7-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. With a strong performance of 17 wins, 2 losses, and 1 tie in their series play, and having secured six wins in their last eight games, they are not a team in dire need of reinforcements. Atlanta has successfully transformed Dominic Smith into a valuable asset and witnessed historic streaks from Matt Olson, along with multiple MVP candidates early in the season.

While the allure of adding Skubal to a playoff rotation alongside Chris Sale is enticing, it comes at a significant cost. The Braves would have to part with valuable young talent for a pitcher recovering from recent elbow surgery and who carries a hefty $32 million salary this season as he approaches free agency. Although Skubal's recovery has shown promising signs, including a simulated game where he reportedly displayed normal velocity, the risks associated with a recent elbow procedure cannot be overlooked.

Additionally, the Braves' current pitching lineup diminishes the urgency to make a high-stakes trade. With Sale performing like a top-tier starter and Bryce Elder enjoying a remarkable season, Atlanta’s existing rotation has been holding its own.
