Why the Chargers Should Consider Signing Deebo Samuel Before Training Camp

The Los Angeles Chargers have spent the offseason reshaping their offense around quarterback Justin Herbert, but one intriguing opportunity still remains on the open market.

As training camp nears, veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel remains unsigned, making him one of the most talented free agents still available and a player the Bolts should seriously consider pursuing.

While the Chargers have confidence in their young receiving corps, adding Samuel would provide an experienced weapon capable of making an immediate impact. His ability to line up both outside, in the slot or even in the backfield, would give the offense another dimension that few players around the league can offer.

Samuel has never been a traditional wide receiver. During his prime with the San Francisco 49ers, he carved out a reputation as one of the league's most versatile offensive players. Whether taking handoffs or creating explosive plays after the catch, Samuel has consistently forced defenses to account for him on every snap.

That versatility would fit well alongside the Chargers current receiver group. Samuel's skill set complements the unit by providing an underneath threat who thrives with the ball in his hands.

Samuel also spent time with new Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel in San Francisco from 2019 to 2021, so an existing relationship could help lure him to Los Angeles.

The Bolts also wouldn't need Samuel to carry the offense. Instead, he could thrive in a complementary role that allows McDaniel to be creative with formations, motion packages and designed touches. Samuel's presence would create favorable matchups while taking pressure off Herbert to consistently push the ball downfield.

There are, of course, legitimate concerns. The 30-year-old is not getting any younger has battled injuries throughout his career and recent years. His production has also dipped from the All-Pro level it once was, raising questions about whether his best football is behind him. Those factors are likely contributing to why he remains available so close to training camp.

Still, the risk may be worth it if the contract reflects those concerns. A short-term, incentive-laden deal would allow Los Angeles to add proven talent without making a significant long-term financial commitment. If Samuel returns to form, the Chargers would have landed one of the biggest bargains of the offseason.

With expectations rising around Herbert and a roster built to compete for a deep playoff run, adding another proven playmaker could be the difference in several close games. Even if Samuel is no longer the All-Pro he once was, his versatility, experience and ability to create yards after the catch make him an intriguing option.
