Yan Liu Takes Charge Amid Chilly Conditions on Opening Day of Meijer LPGA Classic
BELMONT, Mich. — Day 1 of the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give kicked off under unexpectedly cold and windy conditions, presenting a unique challenge for the competitors. The participants faced cloudy skies and gusty winds ranging from 15 to 17 mph at Blythefield Country Club.
Yan Liu embraced the elements, finishing the morning session at the top of the leaderboard with an impressive 6-under-par score of 66. She started her round strong, hitting four birdies over a span of five holes (Nos. 4-8), marred only by a single bogey, as she made the turn with a score of 33. Liu noted that she used the wind to her advantage, particularly on the par-3 15th hole, where the breeze helped her sixth birdie drop. “Actually, I prefer hot,” Liu joked about the chilly weather. “I just very focus my process today. Because it's very windy, a lot of things out of my control so I just do what I can control.”
In the afternoon, the sun emerged, slightly warming the atmosphere, but wind conditions remained steady. Cassie Porter and Jessica Porvasnik made their moves, each ending the day just one stroke behind Liu with rounds of 67. Porvasnik, sporting a new set of irons for the first time, felt confident in her performance. “I think they just hopefully fit well,” she said regarding her new equipment, which her husband encouraged her to try before the upcoming KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. “That’s what a change should be, is it should be something that’s kind of you go out and play the shot and you're like ‘ooh, this is it.’”
Porter also shined in her tournament debut after a previous learning experience. She noted the importance of understanding the course's nuances, emphasizing the need for careful shot placement. “I think you definitely learn out here there are places you just can't miss it,” she stated, highlighting Blythefield's challenging layout.
The leaderboard was crowded with talent, as Celine Borge, Benedetta Moresco, Daniela Darquea, and Jing Yan all recorded rounds of 68 in the morning. This group was later joined by rookie Nastasia Nadaud and seasoned players Minji Kang, Jennifer Kupcho, and Youmin Hwang, making for an exciting day of competition. Julia Lopez Ramirez celebrated a milestone, achieving her first career hole-in-one at the 170-yard par-3 13th, contributing to her total score of 1-under 71. “I was like, no way,” she exclaimed after the remarkable shot.
Defending champion Carlota Ciganda started her title defense with an even-par 72, which included an eagle on the par-5 18th hole. The second round of the Meijer LPGA Classic promises to continue the thrilling competition at Blythefield Country Club.
