‘You Have 1 Better Team’ — Nick Saban Downplays Weak SEC Debate With Blunt Take on Big Ten’s Prowess

Former Alabama coach Nick Saban has carved out a niche for himself as one of the most insightful analysts in the country after retiring in 2024. Before his retirement, Saban dominated college football with the Crimson Tide, helping establish the SEC as the country’s premier conference.

The SEC has not produced a national championship game participant in three straight seasons, its longest drought since 1999-2002. The Big Ten has produced the last three national championships, culminating in the Indiana Hoosiers winning the title in January.

In a broadcast from the SEC media days in Tampa, Saban addressed the Big Ten versus SEC debate that has divided college football and made a huge declaration about the latter.

“I think the only reason people are talking about this is we dominated for so long, and we were so good, everybody makes a big deal out of being able to beat us,” Saban said. “That doesn’t mean they’re better than us, and that doesn’t mean that just because you win the championship that you have a better conference. It just means you have one better team.

“We had five teams in the playoffs last year, I think we’ll have that many teams in the playoffs again. They have to play each other and it’s a special thing with a special team who has things go their way.”

Last season, the SEC had a 3-4 record against the Big Ten, with Saban’s former team, the Crimson Tide, blown out 38-3 by the emerging Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl.

The argument has always been that the Southeastern Conference plays the most gruelling schedule in the country, with more quality spread across the conference than other teams in college football. This argument has ignited widespread debate about whether the SEC deserves more guaranteed spots in the College Football Playoff field than other conferences.

During an appearance on the “Get Up” show, Saban further clarified how to define the best conference in college football.

“First of all, whoever wins a national championship doesn’t define who has the best conference. I think the best conference gets defined by how many good teams you have from top to bottom, and I think the SEC has a lot of good teams from top to bottom,” Saban said. “Last year, we had five teams in the playoff in the SEC, which says there’s pretty good depth in this league.”

The Texas Longhorns notched the SEC’s only postseason win over the Big Ten when they beat the Michigan Wolverines in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. The Iowa Hawkeyes beat the Vanderbilt Commodores in the ReliaQuest Bowl and the Illinois Fighting Illini defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in the Music City Bowl.

The SEC had a run of four consecutive winning seasons against the Big Ten, which ended in 2024 when they went 4-6.
