Young Browns' WR the odd man out of the intense wide receiver battle
Browns' promising wide receiver is the odd man out heading into the 2026 Training Camp.
One of Cleveland's young and promising wide receivers, Cedric Tillman, is unfortunately appearing to be the odd man out in the Browns' receiver room heading into this year's training camp.
Tillman has had more than a fair shot at trying to cement himself as a long-term member of this team and franchise, but his career has never materialized. Tillman was a third-round selection of the Browns after spending his college days at the University of Tennessee. He presents an NFL body type, standing at 6'3" and weighing in at 215 pounds.
He has good hands, decent speed, and is a decent enough route runner. Unfortunately for him, he was the victim of both poor quarterback play and injuries.
In 38 career games for the Browns, he has just 71 catches for 833 yards and five touchdowns. His best season came in 2024 when he had 29 catches for 339 yards and three touchdowns in just 11 games.
As the roster stands right now, the Browns made it very clear this offseason that what was in that room wasn't even close to good enough. They went out and used a first-round pick and a second-round pick on two of the top five receivers in the NFL Draft.
They then signed veteran Tylan Wallace to push from the back of the field and elevate the game of the others in the room. Now, looking at the roster, there are only so many spots available.
The Browns are likely taking six wide receivers onto their active roster next year, and it is likely that four of those are spoken for. Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion a guarenteed a spot, Jerry Jeudy and Isaiah Bond are locks for the roster. That leaves room for one or two more guys.
In that position as the fifth or sixth wide receiver, contributing on special teams is a requirement. No team is wasting that roster spot on a guy who just specializes in offense. Those days, unfortunately, are gone for Tillman.
He is going to have to prove himself to the Cleveland Browns or to the next team he lands with to show he is absolutely worth a roster spot. It will be a real bummer if Tillman doesn't make this roster, as I always saw him as a guy with great promise.
He has never matched that expectation or even come close to it. It will take a miracle, but Tillman seems to be on the trade or cut block.
