The 49ers spent money this free agency looking to replace Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk while adding valuable experience in depth to a room needing both. Jennings is a big slot, but Kirk offers speed from the position with a bit of wiggle, which the 49ers have been missing. Yes, Kirk is smaller, but he will cause matchup problems with linebackers and secondary members. While he does have experience as an “X” and “Z” receiver, Kirk will be in the slot for the most part unless injuries dictate otherwise.

What are realistic expectations for Kirk in 2026?

Coming off a disappointing season in 2025 with the Texans, Kirk only logged 28 receptions for 239 yards and a touchdown. Injuries played a significant role in his performance, and that is a huge concern for the 30-year-old receiver. If the former Cardinals receiver can get back to his 2021 form, the 49ers will take that immediately. With 77 receptions, 982 yards, and five touchdowns, Kirk enjoyed his best season in the NFL before signing a massive deal with Jacksonville, where the receiver topped that production with 84 catches, his first 1,000-yard season, and eight touchdowns.

Now, the 49ers won’t load Kirk up with targets, but a steady, reliable, and available veteran receiver from the slot will be beneficial to Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy in 2026.
