57th Annual Dirt Bowl Celebrates Community Spirit in Shawnee Park
The Shawnee community ushered in the weekend with the 57th edition of the Dirt Bowl, a beloved summer basketball tournament held in Shawnee Park. Teams from across Louisville come together to compete over several weeks, culminating in a championship at the end of the summer.
Since its inception in 1969, the Dirt Bowl has evolved from a neighborhood competition to a showcase for small businesses and community organizations. Ravon Churchill, one of the event's co-organizers, announced that this year features 24 men's teams, four women's teams, and six teams for kids.
"The Dirt Bowl is synonymous with the West End, and there's just absolutely nothing like it,” Churchill shared, highlighting the event's deep roots in local culture and pride. He noted the diverse crowd that attends, from families with strollers to long-time supporters who have been part of the tournament since the 1970s.
Churchill also expressed gratitude to Mayor Craig Greenberg and the Louisville Metro Police Department for their ongoing support, which has helped maintain the Dirt Bowl as a cherished Louisville tradition. He mentioned recent improvements in the park aimed at preventing off-road vehicles from disrupting the games.
The tournament kicked off on June 13 with an exciting matchup between the Kentucky Bourbons and Talented Minds at 1 p.m., followed by Who’s Next vs. D3 Legends at 2 p.m. The action continues on June 14 with the 502 Bad Boys taking on OTF at 1 p.m. For updates and to livestream games, fans are encouraged to visit the Dirt Bowl’s Facebook page.
