Ahlivia East Shines as Oswego Upsets Barrington in Supersectional
DEKALB — Ahlivia East took the opportunity presented to her and transformed it into a defining moment for the Oswego Panthers. The senior first baseman made a statement during a pivotal game against Barrington, showcasing her skills when it mattered most.
In a strategic decision, Barrington’s coach Perry Peterson opted to intentionally walk East's teammate Jaelynn Anthony, the fourth batter, with one run already in and a runner on base. This decision resonated with East, who recalled a similar situation against Yorkville earlier in the season. “It’s kind of a little slap in the face and it’s fun like, ‘Oh, haha,’” she remarked. “But it feels good then to get a hit. ‘OK, you’re gonna walk her? I’m a pretty good hitter, too. Put some respect on my name.’”
East responded emphatically, smashing a two-run double to right-center, contributing to a four-run first inning and powering Oswego to a 7-5 victory over the previously undefeated Barrington. She wasn't finished; East hit another two-run double later in the game, leading her team’s 14-hit offensive effort. With this win, Oswego (23-11) advanced to the state tournament for the third consecutive year, set to face Mundelein (23-5) on Friday.
Last year, East supported her team from the dugout due to an ACL injury she suffered during basketball season, missing out on the title match. “I was the team manager because I was out with an ACL injury — tore it in basketball,” East explained. Her determination to remain part of the team paid off this season as she stepped into a crucial role.
Despite starting the game with a strikeout, East’s focus and preparation shone through in her subsequent at-bats. “I haven’t been seeing the ball the best, so we talked about having a plan for this game,” she said. Her approach paid off, culminating in her sixth double of the season, a testament to her hard work and dedication.
Oswego's coach, Annie Scaramuzzi, expressed her pride in East's performance, noting, “Ahlivia has kind of been a missing piece for us.” The team’s journey to the supersectional reflects their resilience after a challenging start to the season. East's determination and talent have been key components in their success.
