Alabama's William Jennings Finishes Runner-Up at NCAA National Championship
Alabama golfer William Jennings narrowly missed securing the individual title at the NCAA National Championship. He surged ahead with an impressive streak of five birdies over eight holes, closing in on Oklahoma State's Preston Stout. Jennings managed to tie for the lead with a birdie on the 17th hole, but a bogey on the final hole ultimately placed him in second. He concluded his final round with a score of 3-under 69.
"It stings to come up short like that, but there's a lot of positives to take from this week," Jennings reflected in an interview with Golf Channel following his round. His performance included a remarkable opening round where he shot 6-under 66, which put him in a tie for first place. Over the weekend, he maintained his strong play with rounds of 2-under 70 on both Saturday and Sunday, entering the final round in second position.
Jennings earned his spot in the championship as an individual competitor after Alabama finished sixth at the regional tournament. There, he clinched the regional title with an impressive score of 15-under 201, marking him as the fourth Crimson Tide golfer to achieve this honor. Alabama narrowly missed qualifying for the national tournament by just one shot.
This season has been a significant one for Jennings, who also secured victory at the Folds of Honor Collegiate and tied for first at the Ben Hogan Collegiate. Throughout the regular season, he placed in the top five on seven occasions and is set to compete in the 2025 US Amateur Championship.
