Armada Softball Team Advances to Semifinals with Thrilling Quarterfinal Victory

MARYSVILLE — The Armada High School softball team has defied expectations, continuing their impressive journey in the state playoffs. On Tuesday, June 9, the Tigers celebrated a significant victory over Frankenmuth, winning 11-4 in their first MHSAA state quarterfinal appearance since 2011.

With this win, Armada improved their overall record to 35-8 and secured a spot in the Division 2 state semifinal against Stevensville Lakeshore, which is set to take place in East Lansing on Thursday. This marks the team's first semifinal appearance since 2010 and only their third since 1979.

The game began with an exciting turn of events as Armada quickly established a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third and two outs, a wild pitch allowed Grace Girvin to score from third. Subsequently, an error by Frankenmuth's catcher while attempting to throw to third resulted in Lilyana Piconke crossing home plate.

However, the Eagles responded strongly, taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run double that sailed down the left-field line. The Tigers regained the lead in the fifth inning through another unconventional play. Helena Fettue executed a bunt that allowed Addy VanHoeck to score from third, and amidst the ensuing chaos, Charlotte Stang also found her way home, putting Armada ahead 4-3.

Later in the same inning, Taylor Capozzo added to the Tigers' advantage with an RBI single, bringing the score to 5-3. Although Frankenmuth managed to hit a solo home run, Armada responded in the sixth inning with a two-run single from VanHoeck, ultimately finishing the inning with three additional runs.

The semifinal game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. at Secchia Stadium. For updates, contact Brenden Welper at bwelper@usatodayco.com and follow him on X, formerly known as Twitter, @BrendenWelper.
