Athletics Fall Victim to ABS Glitch in Yankees Game

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A malfunction in the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) system marred the Athletics' matchup against the New York Yankees on Saturday night. During the fourth inning, a pitch thrown to A's catcher Shea Langeliers was incorrectly ruled a strike, despite replays indicating it was nearly an inch outside the strike zone.

The pivotal moment occurred when pitcher Ryan Weathers delivered a 2-0 pitch that was called a strike. Langeliers quickly disputed the decision, believing the pitch was low. After a brief pause, home plate umpire Adam Beck confirmed the strike call, leading to the loss of the A's challenge. However, subsequent analysis on MLB.com revealed the pitch was actually 0.8 inches below the strike zone and should have been classified as a ball.

Fortunately for the Athletics, Langeliers later managed to walk, making the controversial call somewhat inconsequential. Following the game, A's manager Mark Kotsay explained that the umpires received confirmation from the ABS operator upstairs that the call was correct. Kotsay noted that the team was able to review the pitch on an iPad after the inning and saw the miscall.

Despite his efforts to discuss the situation with the umpires in between innings, Kotsay was unable to overturn the challenge. He remarked, “Obviously, they don't have access to the iPad. They only have access to the information they're being told through their ear piece. That's something we need clarified through the league, and we will have that conversation with the league.”
