Austin Dillon Reflects on Kyle Busch's Legacy and RCR's Future

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In the wake of Kyle Busch's recent passing, Richard Childress Racing (RCR) is navigating a profound grief that Austin Dillon described as unprecedented for the team. Addressing the media at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday, Dillon shared insights into the emotional turmoil that has enveloped RCR following the tragic event.

“The message this past week has been ‘ride for the brand,’” Dillon noted, emphasizing the importance of unity and commitment among the team members during this tough time. As RCR is deeply rooted in family values and a rich history, the loss has resonated profoundly throughout the organization, prompting reflections on Busch's impact and the future.

Throughout the week, RCR held several gatherings aimed at helping employees process the tragedy. Team president Mike Verlander addressed the staff in a company-wide meeting, while chaplain Nick Terry offered comforting words that resonated with many. The focus of these meetings consistently returned to honoring Busch’s memory in a way he would have appreciated — by continuing to race.

Dillon expressed his personal grief through a heartfelt letter he penned after the news broke, stating, “It was from the heart, and it’s how I felt about Kyle. And it’s gonna hurt for a long time, but I know the character he was, he’d want us to go kick butt.” This sentiment has become a guiding principle for the team as they look to the road ahead.

The future of RCR includes significant decisions, particularly regarding who will take over Busch’s former No. 33 car. Dillon mentioned that while discussions are forthcoming, he currently has faith in Austin Hill to fill that role temporarily. However, on this day, the primary focus remained on supporting one another and cherishing the memory of Busch.

Team owner Richard Childress, who has been personally affected by the situation, has shown remarkable resilience, according to Dillon. He recounted how Childress and his father, Mike Dillon, were present in the hospital during Busch's final moments, while he stayed at the shop to keep the team informed. Reflecting on the parallels with the loss of Dale Earnhardt in 2001, Dillon acknowledged the strength of the relationships that helped RCR endure that tragedy and hopes to replicate that support now. “Hopefully this time around, we can do the same thing that they did the last time around,” he said, underscoring the importance of community in moving forward.
