Ben Shelton Exits French Open in Second Round Upset

Ben Shelton's journey at the French Open came to an abrupt halt as he was defeated in straight sets by Raphael Collignon, with scores of 6-4, 7-5, 6-4, on Thursday. This loss marks yet another setback for Shelton, who has struggled in major tournaments this year, posting a 2-5 record in Grand Slam events since reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January.

Expectations were high for the former Gators star, especially after his victories in two 500-point tournaments this season, including a clay title at the BMW Open in April. However, Collignon seized a crucial break in the opening set, using his effective cross-court backhand to gain an advantage. Shelton attempted to change his strategy in the second set by pushing forward to the net for forehand opportunities, but Collignon's precision on returns thwarted his efforts. A few errors from Shelton allowed Collignon to break late in the set, putting Shelton in a difficult position with a two-set deficit.

In the third set, Shelton's frustration was evident as he struggled to maintain his usual focus and movement. Collignon capitalized on this, securing the most significant victory of his career in just two hours, with Shelton failing to reach a single break point throughout the match. Reflecting on his recent challenges, Shelton shared on Instagram, "Been a brutal couple of months for me to say the least. But like I’ve said before, the failure only fuels me and I got a lot to be grateful for. See you guys on the (grass)."

Despite the loss, Shelton's No. 5 world ranking remains intact, as other seeded players like world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev also exited early. While Felix Auger-Aliassime has surpassed Shelton in the rankings, the exit of Novak Djokovic in the Round of 32 ensures Shelton holds his position for now. The only remaining player who could potentially surpass him is Flavio Cobolli.
