Bengals Enhance Defensive Line with Strategic Veteran Additions
CINCINNATI — The offseason for the Cincinnati Bengals was largely defined by the high-profile trade for Dexter Lawrence, which marked one of the most significant moves in the franchise's history. While Lawrence's acquisition garnered much of the spotlight, the team also made two crucial veteran signings that have flown under the radar, bolstering their defensive line. The Bengals brought in Boye Mafe, a Super Bowl-winning pass rusher, and Jonathan Allen, a reliable interior defender known for his consistency.
The addition of Mafe is particularly intriguing as he appears poised for a breakout year. After a promising start with the Seattle Seahawks, where he amassed 15 sacks over two seasons, Mafe's role shifted in 2025 under coach Mike Macdonald, which limited his opportunities to rush the passer. Despite this setback, advanced metrics suggest he remains one of the most dynamic pass rushers in the league. As he acclimates to the Bengals' system during OTAs, Mafe expressed enthusiasm about his fit: “They give us the freedom on the defensive line to be playmakers and have the opportunity to make things happen,” he said.
At 27 years old, Mafe signed a lucrative three-year, $60 million contract with Cincinnati after his Super Bowl victory. His journey has been marked by challenges, including a rocky rookie season and adjustments to his role in 2025. Now, he is eager to pass on the wisdom gained from these experiences to younger teammates like Myles Murphy and Shemar Stewart. “Half the game is mental,” Mafe noted, emphasizing the importance of understanding the game around him.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Allen, a seasoned two-time Pro Bowler, joined the Bengals on a two-year deal worth approximately $28 million. Originally expected to be the standout addition to the defensive line, he now complements a formidable trio alongside Lawrence and BJ Hill, significantly enhancing the team's defensive tackle group. A former Walter Payton Man of the Year nominee, Allen brings valuable leadership to the squad.
“What I’ve learned in my time in the league is the difference between winning and losing is razor thin,” Allen reflected. He has been a force in recent seasons, racking up 22 sacks between 2021 and 2023, despite facing a pec injury in 2024. After a brief stint with the Vikings, he is ready to make his mark in Cincinnati, driven by the opportunity to compete at a high level. “This team was it. When you have a guy like Joe (Burrow), you have a chance,” he stated, highlighting the team's potential for success this upcoming season.
