Bengals roster spots up for grabs as training camp starts

The Cincinnati Bengals have started to report for training camp.

What figures to be a grueling summer for the all-in team will feature battles for starting jobs, preseason action and, of course, battles for final roster spots, too.

These are some of the areas that have some of the more notable final roster spots up for grabs over the course of training camp.

Bengals training camp roster spots at stake

Sixth wideout

The Bengals are so historically good at drafting receivers that a case of “six or seven?” usually hangs over training camp. That’s the case again this summer, with highlights like Andrei Iosivas, Charlie Jones, Mitch Tinsley, Kendric Pryor and rookie draft pick Colbie Young behind Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

That sixth spot is going to be highly competitive. Jones is mostly special teams, but Tinsley and Pryor have proven themselves in the base offense. A former college free agent like Jordan Moore is capable, too.

Fourth/fifth tight end

How many tight ends? Mike Gesicki, Drew Sample and Erick All are locks. Tanner Hudson would figure to be as the fourth. But he’s also 31 years old and a rookie like Jack Endries has intriguing upside. Cam Grandy has made noise in the past, too. It all comes down to how many they can reasonably fit on the 53.

Interior defensive line

Time is running out for recent draft picks.

Look at this group now:

  • Dexter Lawrence
  • BJ Hill
  • Jonathan Allen
  • TJ Slaton
  • Kris Jenkins
  • McKinnley Jackson
  • Landon Robinson
  • Jordan Jefferson
  • Howard Cross

This offseason was a major indictment on the development of Kris Jenkins and McKinnley Jackson. They might not throw in the towel on an investment like Jenkins just yet, but Jackson got himself benched last year and apparently wanted off the team. The four names in front of them are locks and Landon Robinson and Howard Cross are upstart players with big upside capable of stealing roster spots, making someone like Jenkins a low-key trade candidate.
