Nathan Green wins first American 1500m title in Washington history

Former Washington Huskies track athlete Nathan Green is a national champion once again, this time on the senior level.

Green, who won one NCAA championship on Montlake and entered the weekend as the reigning American indoor champion in the 1500m, held off a kick from Under Armour’s Vincent Ciattei in the final lap of Saturday’s USATF Outdoor Championships final to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles. He outleaned Ciattei at the line to win in 3:50.27 by five hundredths of a second.

The race set up perfectly for Green’s style, as his finishing time was nearly 8 seconds slower than in the heats and 9 seconds slower than Ciattei’s top heat time. But ever since he was representing Washington, Green has shown that he’s nearly unbeatable in tactical races, so a pedestrian 2:15 pace through the first 800 meters with Green parked at the front of the pack boded well for his chances.

The field remained bunched up entering the bell lap, but Green held the top spot. He timed his surge perfectly, holding off charges from Ciattei, former Virginia runner Gary Martin, and former Washington teammate Luke Houser around the outside to win the title in the absence of all three 2024 Paris Olympians in the event.

“At the end of the day, no matter what you say about the race, I still won," Green said of the absence of those stars in a post-race interview with DyeStat. "And anybody who says anything about who would’ve been in this or who would’ve been in that… it doesn’t matter. I still won.”

Despite the Mile City moniker, Green is the first former Husky to win an outdoor American championship in the event. He also becomes just the fourth man this decade to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles, joining three-time Olympian and 2016 gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz (2015, 2016), Diamond League veteran Craig Engels (2019), and 2024 gold medalist Cole Hocker (2024).

Four of the twelve men in the finals ran collegiately at Washington. Houser finished sixth after fading down the final stretch in 3:50.87, recent graduate Reuben Reina was ninth in 3:50.99, and two-time NCAA champion Joe Waskom finished in twelfth in 3:51.99.
