Birds complete series sweep over Chicago with walk-off
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (CANARIES) — The Sioux Falls Canaries earned their first walkoff victory of the season on Sunday, topping Chicago 5-4 in 11 innings.
Joe Vos tripled with two outs in the bottom of the third and scored on a base hit from Anthony Sharkas. Vos later walked to begin the fifth inning and scored on a wild pitch.
Josh Rehwaldt clubbed an RBI double in the seventh inning to give the Canaries a 3-0 advantage.
Down to their final strike, the Dogs battled back and tied the game with three runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings.
Chicago took their first lead with a run-scoring single in the top of the tenth before Sioux Falls tied the game in home half on an RBI infield hit from Jabari Henry.
Charlie Hasty tossed a scoreless eleventh inning, retiring all three batters he faced. Anthony Sharkas, the automatic runner at second base, advanced to third on a flyout to start the bottom half before Rehwaldt walked. Michael Curialle then smacked a walkoff single to secure the three-game series sweep.
Sharkas finished with three hits while Curialle and Mike Hart each added two. Garrett Martin allowed a run over eight innings as the Birds improve to a league-best 8-2 overall.
