Blackhawk Secures Spot in PIAA 4A Softball Championship with Win Over Harbor Creek

MEADVILLE — Blackhawk's softball team has faced challenges in the past when holding a three-run lead, having lost the WPIAL 4A championships the previous two years under similar circumstances. However, with a chance to reach the PIAA high school softball championship on the line, the Cougars played with determination, overcoming a late push from Harbor Creek to win 7-5, thus earning their first-ever appearance in a state championship game. “These girls are so resilient, and I am so proud of the way that we played today,” said head coach Jim Riggio. “Getting those three runs early was huge. We’re going to compete for a state championship, which is pretty cool.”

Typically, the top of the batting order drives the offense, but it was the bottom of Blackhawk’s lineup that ignited their scoring in this match. After two scoreless innings, catcher Hannah Nolte broke the silence with a double to left-center in the third. Soon after, Addy Ramer delivered the first run of the game with a single to left. “No matter where someone is in the order, we can hit and make an impact,” noted Blackhawk shortstop Brynn Hysong. “Those girls at the bottom of the order can still hit the ball really well and come through when we need them.”

Blackhawk's attack was bolstered by key performances from right fielder Ava Elich and pitcher Kylie Prisuta, who contributed to six of the team’s seven runs. Elich added two runs with a single in the third and another RBI single in the fifth. Prisuta also helped her cause dramatically, hitting a three-run homer over the left field wall. “I got a hold of one earlier that went foul, so I just waited back on that change-up and got a hold of it,” she expressed. “I was so happy when I saw that ball get over the wall.”

In addition to her offensive contributions, Prisuta displayed her skills in the circle, managing to navigate through various challenges. Despite allowing some base runners, she struck out nine batters, including six consecutively after giving up an early walk. Although Harbor Creek made a late-game run, scoring four times to narrow the gap, Prisuta maintained her composure and secured the final outs. “There were some nerves in the seventh inning when they started to score some runs, but I have all the trust in my defense to make the plays, and they did,” she stated.

Blackhawk now sets its sights on winning the coveted state championship, as they prepare to face District II champion Valley View on Friday, June 12, at 1:30 p.m. at Nittany Lion Softball Park. This marks a significant moment in the program's history as they strive for their first PIAA title.
