Bloomington North Boys Track Team Eyes Historic State Title

Alan Hays isn't the only athlete on the Bloomington North boys track team facing challenges this season. After finishing as runner-ups last year and securing three indoor championships, the Cougars are determined to achieve their first outdoor state title. However, their path to victory has been uncertain, especially leading up to last week's regional competition. While some of North's top athletes recovered just in time, the team's success can largely be attributed to its impressive depth and talent.

Senior Caelan D'Onofrio expressed his admiration for the team’s resilience, stating, "We've had so many guys step up. Our depth is insane. This is one of the strongest teams I've ever seen overall." D'Onofrio, who has been with the program since its formative years, believes that their past successes have motivated newer members to strive for greatness. "I had that same experience when I was a freshman looking up to Kyle Clark, and now it's kind of cool to be in the same position, dragging others along," he added.

Caleb Winders, a key member of both the 4x800 and 4x400 relays, has not competed in either event for two weeks due to hamstring issues. However, he managed to secure the top time in the 800 at the regional meet, allowing him a chance to pursue an unprecedented fourth consecutive title in the 4x800 and help the 4x400 team contend for a top finish. "I'm super excited about some relays next week," Winders said, expressing gratitude for his teammates' contributions during his recovery.

The 4x800 relay has seen a rotation of athletes, including senior Jacob Mitchell, who has battled illness this season. Coach Justin Helmer noted Mitchell’s comeback as a significant morale booster. The team has also included runners like Jake Gentry, Jackson Walker, and D'Onofrio, allowing for a versatile lineup. "It's really a huge confidence booster," D'Onofrio shared, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and shared responsibilities.

In addition to their strong distance runners, the Cougars also excel in throwing events. Adis Hamidovic returns to compete in discus and shot put, while sophomore Quinn Walters also qualified in discus. Hays aims to score points in the hurdles, and the 4x100 relay team is set to compete, along with senior Evan Cheng, who made it to the long jump despite limited practice this season. As the Cougars prepare for their state meet at North Central High School, they aim to send assistant coach Charlie Warthan off into retirement with a championship win.
