Blue Jays Manager John Schneider Addresses Calls to Lower Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in Batting Order

PHOENIX, AZ - As the 2026 season progresses, the Toronto Blue Jays find themselves grappling with a series of challenges. With aspirations for postseason success and a roster featuring some of baseball's biggest stars, the team's inconsistency has become a significant concern. Factors such as injuries and fluctuating offensive output have hindered their performance in an increasingly competitive American League.

At the center of the scrutiny is first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is regarded as a key figure in the franchise. Having recently signed a landmark long-term contract that positions him as the face of the organization, Guerrero's recent struggles have prompted discussions around his batting performance. His power numbers have sharply declined, with only three home runs this season, and he hasn’t hit one since May 17 against the Los Angeles Angels. Notably, he has yet to clear the fence at Rogers Centre this year.

In light of these concerns, some fans and analysts have suggested that moving Guerrero down in the batting order could relieve some pressure and help him regain his form. However, Blue Jays manager John Schneider has pushed back against this notion. In a recent interview on Sportsnet 590, he emphasized that demoting Guerrero is not a solution. “He’s too good to kind of try to motivate by demoting him,” Schneider stated, affirming Guerrero’s role as a pivotal player for the team.

Schneider further elaborated on the immense pressure Guerrero faces, stating, “The dude lives with astronomical pressure that people don’t understand.” He expressed his desire to avoid contributing to the narrative that Guerrero is merely a singles hitter, preferring instead to focus on building his confidence. The Blue Jays remain committed to Guerrero as a cornerstone of their lineup, believing that patience and support are more effective than a lineup shuffle in addressing his current challenges.
