Browns' Quarterback Race Heats Up as Shedeur Sanders Shows Progress

The competition for the starting quarterback position in Cleveland is intensifying as Shedeur Sanders demonstrates significant improvement ahead of training camp. Initially, the battle between Sanders and Deshaun Watson faced criticism from new head coach Todd Monken, who noted some troubling interceptions during offseason training activities. However, the latest reports from mandatory minicamp indicate that both quarterbacks have made notable strides.

According to Daniel Oyefusi from ESPN, Sanders has been displaying a newfound composure within Monken’s offensive scheme. "Sanders looked more poised in Monken’s offense as time went on, and coaches lauded improvements in his footwork and processing," Oyefusi remarked, highlighting the young quarterback's development.

Watson, who has been sidelined since the 2024 season due to an Achilles injury, is also working to regain his form. In his last season, he managed to throw for 1,148 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions over seven games, struggling particularly with deep throws and mobility. Oyefusi pointed out that Watson has been “more willing to push the ball downfield” during recent practices compared to his previous tenure under former head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Monken expressed confidence in both quarterbacks, stating, "It would feel different if I didn’t feel like their progression hadn’t gotten to this point where I think they both can start and play winning football." With training camp on the horizon, the Browns plan to let both players share reps, creating an open competition.

Beyond the on-field performance, the situation holds potential implications for the team's future. With Sanders, 24, showing promise as a fifth-round pick from 2025, he may represent the long-term answer for the franchise. Conversely, a successful season for Watson could benefit the Browns in the upcoming free agency, potentially leading to a compensatory draft pick.
