Bud Cauley Achieves Long-Awaited Victory at RBC Canadian Open
After an arduous journey through 239 PGA Tour events and numerous challenges, Bud Cauley finally celebrated a long-awaited triumph at the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday. Overjoyed and emotional, Cauley's victory marked a significant milestone in his career, one that followed years of hard work and perseverance.
Cauley, who had to overcome severe injuries that sidelined him for over three years, won by two strokes against a rapidly closing Matt Fitzpatrick in Caledon, Ontario. His performance was highlighted by an impressive stretch of four birdies in five holes on the back nine, culminating in a five-under 65 on the North Course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. “I hit a lot of good shots. I made a lot of good putts... I’m just so happy,” he expressed, reflecting on his remarkable comeback.
The 36-year-old golfer's journey to this moment began 15 years ago when he turned professional after an illustrious college career at the University of Alabama. His comeback from a near-fatal car accident in 2018, which left him with multiple serious injuries, was not easy. Following the accident, Cauley underwent a series of surgeries and faced a lengthy recovery that made him question whether he could ever return to competitive golf. “There were times when I was hurt that we really weren't sure if I was going to be able to play again,” he admitted.
This season had been inconsistent for Cauley until he arrived in Canada, where he found himself tied for seventh after a strong second round. He began the final round just one stroke behind the leader, and as he navigated the course, he showcased his skill against a field of seasoned competitors. His ability to capitalize on fortunate breaks, including a ball that deflected off a moving golf cart, played a crucial role in his success.
As the tournament concluded, Cauley embraced his family, allowing tears of joy to flow freely. The long wait—30 years since he first dreamed of being a professional golfer—was finally over. His victory not only earned him $1.764 million but also solidified his place in the upcoming Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. With this win, Bud Cauley has proven that resilience and determination can lead to fulfilling one's dreams.
